About the tour
Berkeley Summer Academy of Sustainability is an intensive 2-week hybrid high school program designed to give a limited number of students a STEM field college experience. This project-based program combines lectures and laboratory sessions to give students practical experience in science and engineering. Students will learn scientific foundations of engineering, develop and transform their ideas into executable designs, and eventually build their own prototypes, which they will showcase during the Completion Ceremony.
The 2-week program is divided into two parts: class lectures and hands-on experimental lab opportunities.
The course curriculum will focus on the following topics:
. Quantum Physics: Dive into the amazing world of superconductors! You’ll get to use liquid nitrogen to chill special materials to unbelievably low temperatures, turning them into perfect conductors with zero resistance. Watch in awe as superconductors float above a magnet—a phenomenon that could one day transform transportation and energy efficiency.
. Solar Energy: Ever wondered how solar panels work? You’ll build a simple Schottky junction solar cell, the building block of solar panels. Discover how sunlight gets converted into electricity and see how solar energy is shaping the future of renewables.
. Metamaterials – 3D Print Your Way to Innovation: Step into the cutting-edge world of metamaterials! These special materials have properties not found in nature. Using 3D printing, you’ll create unique structures that can bend, absorb, or manipulate energy in unexpected ways. Imagine how these could be used for invisibility cloaks or earthquake-resistant buildings in the future!
. Clean Water Technology: Clean water is essential, but not always available. You’ll experiment with membrane filtration, a key technology for desalination and water purification. See how advanced materials can remove pollutants and help provide safe drinking water to communities around the world.
. AI/ML: Did you know AI can help us discover new materials? You’ll explore how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are used in this field. By working with the Materials Project—a massive database of material properties—you’ll learn to analyze data and predict how different materials behave. It’s like having a high-tech treasure map to find the perfect material for any purpose.
. Failure: Why Things Break! Ever wonder why bridges collapse? We’ll test materials to see where they fail and then use a powerful microscope to see the tiny cracks. You’ll learn how engineers design stronger stuff to stop disasters.
In addition to academic classes, students will experience college life, eating at Berkeley cafeterias, and interacting with UC Berkeley undergrad and graduate students. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit places such as Berkeley student labs and Silicon Valley companies.
This program allows students to meet new friends from around the world and build important life skills that can make their future college experience a success — all while strengthening their college application.

The school has also been at the forefront of sustainability, robotics, and artificial intelligence, with 25 Nobel Prize winners, countless industry-changing inventions, and numerous prestigious awards and honors.
This summer, we are excited to continue our partnership with the Berkeley Summer Institute for Sustainability to provide high school students with a rich summer camp experience. Based on our long-standing and good partnership with UC Berkeley, we are currently able to provide a limited number of guaranteed places. We also provide Chinese customer service and registration assistance for students and parents in need.
